I
went and saw Casino Royale yesterday. I was a bit gun shy (no pun intended) about checking out the latest James Bond flick...I really had a very poor impression of them after Pierce Brosnan sissified Bond for the past few shows. I had also read on Drudge about a year ago that the new bond was essentially a blond-haired, blue-eyed girly man. The actor was hurt the first week on the set. So I had some bias going into the show.
I was blown away! This is the greatest Bond flick, IMHO, since Connery graced the character. The movie was longer than I expected (with all of the info available these days why don't I just look up the movie length before I go see it?) and came in a little over 2 1/2 hours. However, I was glued to the screen the entire time.
For the amount of action involved I was surprised at how clean the movie was. I think there was only one swear word, the bond ladies kept their clothes on, and the sexual innuendos were few and far between. There was very little use of gadgetry, and I actually appreciated this...it had been worn thin recently I think.
I found it interesting that Bond now plays Hold 'Em instead of traditional poker. Way to stay with the times, James. Throughout James is the confident, strong, bad Bond that I think I've always known he could be. It's nice to see Bond with some cajones for once. Speaking of cajones, there is this brutal scene where he is strapped to an old wicker chair and...well, ouch. You'll have to see for yourself. It just hurts to watch. Everyone in the audience was flinching in their seats during this part. Bond delivers some of the best I'm-so-much-tougher-than-you-can-even-imagine dialogue during this part. Brilliant.
Overall I give this movie an 'A'. Two thumbs up. 100%. You really need to go see this movie in the theaters. Go see it this weekend so that box office numbers will spike and maybe down the road director Martin Campbell will produce more quality action flicks and less stupid, girly man one-liners (like his previous Bond attempt 'GoldenEye').
